Think Giti is just another budget tyre brand? Think again. Founded in 1951, Giti is now being chosen by brands like BMW and Tesla for all-important factory fitment. Here’s why.
One of the greatest engineering challenges for a tyre is ultra-high speed. At 490km/h, the wheel on a car is rotating approximately 4000 times per minute, or 66 times a second, while the forces on the tyre itself can exceed 5000g. A tyre pressure monitoring sensor within the tyre's carcass weighing maybe 30 grams can, due to centripetal force, turn into the equivalent of 80kg trying to tear through rubber as you approach nearly half the speed of sound.
Just two brands have been able to engineer a tyre that can withstand these speeds reliably enough that a test driver would bet their life on it. One is Michelin with the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ and the other, Giti Tire with the Yangwang U9 Xtreme.
In this article, we’ll get to know the softly spoken engineering powerhouse Giti Tire – and why brands like BMW and Tesla are now choosing it for OE-fitment on their cars.
The day Giti Tire entered the (ultra-exclusive) 500km/h club
The ‘standard’ Yangwang U9 comes with Pirelli P Zeros, but for the Xtreme, Yangwang – the ultra-luxury arm of BYD – swaps on GitiSport e.GTR2 Pro semi-slicks rated to 500km/h.
In September 2025, the all-electric Yangwang U9 Xtreme hypercar – powered by four motors, making a breathtaking 2220kW combined – hit 496.22km/h at the ATP Automotive Papenburg Test Track in Germany. In the process, it beat Bugatti’s previous 490.48km/h top speed and raised plenty of eyebrows within engineering departments across the continent. Giti had arrived.
Giti Tire: increasingly the choice of the world’s leading car brands
When it’s not developing some of the most advanced tyres in the world, Giti Tire – headquartered in Singapore – is supplying car companies from BMW to Tesla, GWM and Peugeot.
Chinese mega-brands such as BYD, Chery, LDV, MG and Geely fit Giti tyres as standard. Now European and American car makers are joining the list of brands to fit Giti tyres as OE standard equipment.
In Europe, BMW has now fitted Giti Tire to four models – winter tyres on 1 Series and 2 Series, and now GitiSynergy H3 to iX1 and iX2. You may also find OE-fitment Giti tyres on some Minis. In Australia, Volkswagen fits Giti tyres to its new Kombi-inspired ID. Buzz Cargo and soon Tesla is expected to start offering the GitiControl P10 as standard on the 2026 Model 3.
The list goes on. In Australia, the Peugeot 3008 and 5008 SUVs come with standard Giti tyres.
When a car brand fits tyres as standard from the factory, the tyres must meet the brand’s stringent OE standards for durability, safety and reliability. Often, the car company’s engineers will work with those from the tyre company to optimise the tyres for the car. For a car company to trust a tyre brand for standard fitment on its cars is a huge deal.
Giti has secured and maintains more than 675 ongoing projects with global car makers, with around 175 focused on electric vehicles.
Engineering world-class products for 75 years
While Giti makes tyres for motorcycles, trucks, buses, SUVs, off-roaders, even race cars, it is not a new brand. Far from it.
This year, Giti Tire was recognised as the fastest-growing tyre brand in recent evaluations. Founded in 1951 and now headquartered in Singapore, Giti started off as a manufacturer of bicycle tyres and inner tubes before engineering tyres for passenger cars beginning in 1981.
Launched in 1996, GT Radial Tyres – which once had four-time Bathurst winner Allan Moffat OBE as an ambassador – is a Giti Tire brand.
In 1993, Giti Tire entered the Chinese market and by 2000 was the top-selling passenger car tyre brand in all of China, beating all other legacy brands. Now, Giti is the eighth most valuable tyre brand in the world, according to the latest Brand Finance data.
Four global R&D centres and more than 800 engineering personnel
As well as its five manufacturing plants, Giti Tire operates four research and development (R&D) centres strategically located around the world. The largest proving ground in Southeast Asia, located in Karawang, Indonesia, is owned by Giti Tire.
Currently Giti is the official tyre partner of a VW ID. Buzz attempting a new Guinness World Record for “Most Number of Countries Visited by an EV”. The ID. Buzz is heading to 80 countries – and has already dashed across Australia – with German world-record-holding driver, Rainer Zietlow. It’s doing it all on the one Giti tyre pattern, Giti SynergyH2, a German-engineered tyre with a top-tier AA EU Rating, designed for EVs and hybrids.
Giti tyres are engineered to global standards, including the International Organisation for Standardisation, or ISO.
Motorsport successes from Pikes Peak to the Nürburgring 24 Hour
There’s no more convincing marketing than your product surviving some of the toughest real-world challenges imaginable – from Pikes Peak to open-wheelers, GT3 endurance events at the Nürburgring and even truck racing.
In 2013, Giti Tire worked with Nobuhiro 'Monster' Tajima to specially engineer the GitiCompete GTR1 tyre for Tajima’s E-Runner Pikes Peak Special, to take on that year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. It was the first electric Pikes Peak vehicle to break the course’s 10-minute mark.
In 2017, Giti Tire made its Nürburgring 24 Hour debut fitted to a Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo GT3 car. The team finished second in the SP8 class. In 2019, the Giti team finished one-two in its class.
Giti tyres have also been seen in Formula Regional Middle East, Formula 4 South East Asia, the British Truck Racing Championship, the Malaysian Touring Car Championship, Polo Cup Germany, ADAC NLS2 Germany, Lotus Cup China and even the Macau GP.
A brand focused on sustainability
Giti engineers have produced a tyre made with a 93 per cent sustainable material composition. Of that, 40 per cent are recycled materials including recycled plastic bottles – and Giti expects it to enter mass production by 2030.
The tyre contains 53 per cent renewable materials including natural rubber, pine resin, rice husk silica and other plant-based elements. Importantly, it demonstrates that Giti is invested in becoming a capable, responsible and future-focused tyre manufacturer in the long term – going beyond the platitude of doing what is right for the moment.
Giti Tire is a full member of the Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber (GPSNR) and has joined the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) for sustainable growth, looking to encourage others and share their experience.
